Supply List
August 2015
Dear Class,
Welcome to 5th Grade! I hope you are enjoying the last weeks of summer and are excited about the new school year! I am very excited to meet all of you. We all get a little nervous at the beginning of a new school year. But it won't take long before we all know each other and feel comfortable in our new class.
Your class will be my 9th fifth grade class at the Molin School. Before that I was the Technology Integration Specialist for both elementary and middle school and worked at the Bresnahan School for 8 years.
I have three children; Adam is 28, works for Oracle and lives in Malden. Alex is 26, a software engineer, and Jaime is 21; they live in Newburyport with me and my husband, Ron. We have lived in our historic old house on Turkey Hill Road since 1986.
This year, Mrs. Langlois and I will be teaching as a team. Mrs. Langlois will be teaching Writing and Science to both classes and I will teach Mathematics and Social Studies to both classes. We will each teach reading and have morning meeting with our homeroom class.
Our school day begins at 8:10 am and you may arrive at school as early as 7:55 am. Prior to that there is no supervision outside for students. Watch for an update from Ms. Rossi, on the arrival procedure for the first days of school and follow the directions on where to meet me.
For the first day of school, please bring a snack and drink, your backpack, a sweatshirt or sweater, and any school supplies you have. Please come prepared on the Tuesday after Labor Day with your summer reading responses. You can check the Molin website to review what is due!
The supply list for this year follows this letter. Don't worry about getting everything for the first couple of days, just get things when you can. Please let me know if you have difficulty getting any of these supplies.
Email me if you have any questions or concerns. I hope you enjoy these last days of summer fun with your families and I look forward to seeing you on the 2th of September!
Happy Days!

Gorilla Antics at the Franklin Park Zoo
The Gorillas at the Zoo always put on a good show and this year they were in fine form! One of them was so engrossed in the accordion music being played outside his window that he pounded the window if she stopped playing. Another gorilla sitting nearby seemed jealous of the attention being given to the musician and threw a red ball at the window where she was playing.

Author's Day
This Friday, April 17, Mrs. Kathleen Benner Duble author of "The Sacrifice" will be coming to meet with the Molin School Fifth graders. "The Sacrifice" is a fact-based story about the hysteria that resulted in We are currently reading this book and the students have been fascinated by the story which is about the Salem witch trials and is told from the point of view of a 10- year old girl living in Andover at the time. The main character is an ancestral grandmother of the author and the story is based on actual events in her family history, The Sacrifice provides an opportunity for students to examine this historic time in early American history by understanding the devastating effects the trials had not just in Salem but throughout Massachusetts and exploring theories about why this could have happened. Students will learn about the process of writing a book from Mrs. Duble and have an opportunity to ask her questions about her book.

Math Homework Help
Here is a website for homework help for the fifth grade common core math program. Proceed with caution. I would rather the students didn't do the homework than have them copy answers or have someone else do it for them. But this website may help you as parents, see what the assignments are looking for in terms of strategies for solving math problems and understanding the tools that are used to help students learn how to solve them. I hope this is helpful. Remember that it is better that I know your child is unable to do the homework than have a completed paper with no learning attached to it. Homework isn't graded but the skills practiced through the homework are assessed.

We are studying the structure and function of plants and life cycles. We have Painted Lady butterfly larvae which have formed their chrysalis and are in the Pupa stage. We should see the butterfly emerging sometime soon.
Using a Rose of Sharon Flower, the students identified the parts of the flower and created posters.
We learned that a dormant seed has the potential to grow into a plant if given what it needs to grow. We sprouted lima bean seeds and determined that the roots will always grow down in search of the water and nutrients the plant needs, and the plant will always grow toward the sun. We selected the most promising bean sprouts to plant and hopefully will be able to see the complete life cycle of the lima bean plant.

Welcome to Fifth Grade and Room 116!!!
My name is Mrs. Case and I love teaching 5th grade! I am very excited to meet all of you on September 4. Are you a little nervous about the first day of school? I am!
But it won't take long before we all know each other and feel comfortable in our new class. I hope you all had a fun-filled and relaxing summer and are ready for another great year at the Molin School!
Click the button above for a list of school supplies. Please bring any of the school supplies you have (at least a pencil) on the first day of school. It's okay if you don't have all of your supplies yet. Try to have them by Monday September 8th and please let me know if you have difficulty getting any of these supplies.
Our school day begins at 8:10 am and you may arrive at school as early as 7:55 am. Prior to that there is no supervision outside for students. Watch for an update from Ms. Rossi, on the arrival procedure for the first days of school and follow the directions on where to meet me.
For the first day of school, please bring a snack and drink, your backpack, a sweatshirt or sweater, and your summer reading assignment. Remember that?? You still have plenty of time to finish it, if you've let it slip. In case you misplaced the assignment sheet, the links are Summer Reading List and Assignment for Extra Credit by Andrew Clements.
Fifth Grade is an exciting year full of meaningful experiences both in and out of the classroom. I look forward to starting this journey with you very soon.
I hope you enjoy these last days of summer fun with your families and I look forward to seeing you on the 4th of September 4!
Happy Days!

Happy Days!
Mrs. Case

Another school year is swiftly coming to a close. You are starting to think about Camp Kieve (don't forget to send in the forms), and teams for sixth grade. Middle School. Another big step. Very exciting and maybe a little scary? Summer's coming - just exciting.
We still have almost 4 weeks of school left and it is an event packed time. I will give you the dates for the end of year activities that I know and remind you to check the Molin Page and the Take Home Tuesday page for updates.
Some Dates to Remember:
Thursday, June 5, is our next early release day. Students are dismissed at 11:30, and there is no lunch served.
June 12, Molin Concert on the Park, 6-8pm
June 13, Step Up Day: Students meet their 6th grade teachers and find out more about next year!
Molin Survivor Day, June 17 with a rain date of June 18. We will need lots of volunteers for this day so if you haven't had a chance yet, this is a good one. We need some people to come in and work our "station" in shifts for an hour or so and some people to send in snacks and water, a wagon and some coolers. Our class representative will coordinate.
June 19, Fifth Grade Celebration, Last Day of School, Early Release at 11:30

In Search of a Story
Teachers from Historic New England visited us to prepare for our writing project, "In Search of a Story". Following a trip to the Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm in Newbury where the students experience the life of a gentleman farmer and shipping merchant, Captain Offin Boardman, the students wrote short stories using what they learned about farming and life in our city during the period from 1790 - 1811 when Captain Boardman owned the farm. He left detailed diaries and many artifacts have been found at the location to help stir the imaginations of our young writers.

Some of the students wrote and illustrated their stories in Storyjumper where they can be viewed or printed.

Some Dates to Remember:
MCAS SCIENCE testing is on May 6 and 7
MCAS MATH testing is on May 14 and 15
Reminders: Early to bed, eat a good breakfast, get to school on time feeling enthusiastic about Showing What We Know!
April 29 we are visited by teachers from Historic New England to prepare for our writing project, "In Search of a Story". We follow up with a trip to the Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm in Newbury on Wednesday April 30, where the students experience the life of a gentleman farmer and shipping merchant, Captain Offin Boardman, in the late 1700's.
One of my favorite stories in Newburyport history is that Captain Boardman is credited with capturing two British Naval vessels in one day during the early days of the American Revolution after George Washington came to Newburyport and other port cities to ask the shipping merchants to outfit their ships as warships. This was a practice known as Privateering, and the "Patriot Pirates" as they came to be known, were allowed to keep any booty on the British ships as payment. The intention was to prevent British ships from delivering supplies and soldiers (Redcoats) to the port cities of the East. This effort is recognized as the roots of the American Navy. So, while we will be investigating Offin Boardman's life many years later when he settled into the life of a gentleman farmer, he had a very colorful past and was an important figure in Newburyport's history during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
Thursday, May 1, is our next early release day. Students are dismissed at 11:30, and there is no lunch served.
May 8 we will be visiting the Minuteman National Park in Lexington, for a program called Rebels, Redcoats and Homespun Heroes. This is an interdisciplinary program about the early days of the American Revolution and how colonial men and women and British soldiers each had an important role to play.

We are off to a great start in Room 116!
And what a great group of parents we have. Every student returned both signed notices on the 2nd day of school. I'm pretty sure that is the first time that's happened in the history of the universe.
Speaking of great parents, we need a volunteer coordinator (liaison) for our classroom. If you are interested, let me know, and/or go to http://newburyportpto.com/volunteers/, sign up to be a volunteer and indicate on the form that you are interested in being the liaison to our class.
Anyone interested in volunteering this year needs to go through the steps outlined at the link above. If you have any questions, please let me know. We have a number of outstanding field experiences planned for this year where I will need chaperones, There are also a number of in-class support needs if you happen to be available during the school day at times, and there are class parties at special times throughout the year where parents can help out with refreshments and party goods.

GMADE Testing is this week. Tuesday September 17 and Wednesday September 18.
Reminders to get a good night sleep, have a good breakfast, and be on time to school.
These are beginning the the year standardized math tests that help teachers plan instruction, are compared with the MCAS scores to provide a clearer picture of the child as a math student, and provide another measure of success by comparing them to the GMADE test taken at the end of the school year.
Picture day is Wednesday September 18. The school picture order forms went home on Friday September 6.
Open House is the evening of September 19th from 6:00 to 7:30. I hope to meet all of you and have a chance to talk about the 5th grade curriculum and answer questions you might have. There will be a sign up for the November Parent Teacher Conferences available.
The following two notices were also sent home, but are here for reference:
